Creation Entertainment’s 16th Annual GRAND SLAM: THE SCI-FI SUMMIT - Day 1

4-11-08 Burbank Airport Marriott, Burbank, CA.
2:45 P.M. FRIDAY- It seemed like yesterday that I made the trek over the hill into the sweltering heat of The Valley alas it was time again to plop my keister on the floor of the Burbank Airport Marriott to cover the annual Grand Slam ( http://www.creationent.com/ ). Fridays are usually quite so I took my time getting there as the first person on stage was Buffy & Angel bad boy Tom Lenk ( http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/film/1041 ) I worked on a vampire film a few years back with him called “The Thirst” . Just after him was Star Trek Voyager resident Vulcan Tim Russ who has been busy directing many Star Trek themed projects including a very cool film that I worked on called “Star Trek: Of Gods and Men” ( http://www.startrekofgodsandmen.net/main/ ) . In Between panels I hung out with Camden Toy ( http://www.camdentoy.com/ ) who is going to be hosting a new show for Highlander Films ( http://www.highlanderfilms.net/ ) called “Inside Horror” alongside Lisa Wilcox of Nightmare On Elm Street fame. As I walked the floor I saw Richard Kiel ( http://www.richardkiel.com/ )who played Jaws in the James Bond films, Gary Lockwood ( http://www.gary-lockwood2001.com/welcome.html ) was selling his book 2001 Memories and even Brent Spiner ( http://www.therealbrentspiner.com/ ) had his own table where he was selling his new cd Dreamland. Just adjacent to the photo ops was the autograph room where Star Trek actors signed memorbillia and vintage stills from their original series guest shot, it was there where I had the chance to catch up with “Battlestar Galactica” star Herb Jefferson. Next up on the agenda were some reaccuring actors that made appearences on the different Star Trek shows, Salome Jens, Suzie Plakson, Max Grodenchik and Vaughn Armstrong. The quartet shared their experiences on their respected shows and answered questions from the audience lining up on both sides of the stage. As 4:20 rolled around it was clear that the day belonged to the day’s headliner Nichelle Nichols, she regaled the crowd about her meeting with Martin Luther King encouraging her to stay on Star Trek after she had decided to leave the show. Had she left the show it might have been years until we saw the first interracial kiss on primetime television or seeing a lead African American Woman actress on TV. Something to think about…
