THE WORLD PREMIERE OF 8 MILE
Photos and Text by ALBERT L. ORTEGA
NOVEMBER 6, 2002, MANN'S VILLAGE THEATER, WESTWOOD, CA.
It just doesn't make any sense to me, why the younger generation always seems enthralled by the so-called bad boys of entertainment. That being said the streets of UCLA town, Westwood was packed to the rafters with bonafide Eminem fans, chanting for his arrival and in true diva like personality the brooding rapper/thespian in the making arrived with scads of bodyguards and posse in tow. Shunning the media he choose to plow his way down the red carpet occasionally pumping his fist in the air to the shrills of his devoted followers. In addition to Eminem's presence was director Curtis Hanson and costars Brittney Murphy, Mekhi Phifer, Kim Bassinger, Eugene Byrd, Taryn Manning, Anthony Mackie, Evan Jones, Omar Benson Miller, De'Anglo Wilson, Chloe Greenfield and producer Brian Grazer. Other pedigree stars of the Hollywood elite included
Matthew Perry, Apollonia, Christina Aguilera, Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock, Elisa Cuthbert, Lucy Liu, Avril Lavigne, Ashton Kutcher, Matthew Lillard, Richard Schiff and Sheila Kelly, Kelly Preston, Claire Forlani, David Alan Grier, Tracee Ellis Ross, Donald Faison, Helen Hunt, Macy Gray, Alicia Silverstone, Kate Bosworth, Cedric The Entertainer, Nick Cannon, Jessica Capeshaw and rappers, RZA, Dr. Dre and Queen Latifah.
8 Mile represent the city limit around Detroit, its' also a boundry and border for those inside and outside the zone. Loosely based on rapper Eminem's own life, 8 Mile is the story of factory worker Jimmy Smith Jr. aka B-Rabbit and his struggle to find the voice within himself to break free. He shares his home with his alcoholic mother and little sister in a trailer park that they will soon become evicted from. His only chance of getting out of his day to day meager life is to become a famous rapper and with the help of his friends he manages to keep his dream of success alive. 8 Mile manages to pull out some impressive performances by the supporting cast but its' really Eminem's (Marshall Mathers) debut performance that has both critics and audience members swooning and despite his initial problems with director Curtis Hanson he got his
act together just in time to really "act."
