"Rockstar: INXS" - And Then There Were Three...
|
The Zone's Eye View:
By Laura Alber
There seems to be a New Sensation these days that some are calling "an addiction". CBS's "Rockstar:INXS" has been taking over the TV-land three nights a week. What started as a very low rated show 9 weeks ago is now all the buzz. They moved their timeslot from Monday nights to Tuesday nights and the ratings rose to the occasion!
"Rockstar:INXS" is one of the latest reality shows, created by Reality King Mark Burnett. The premise: to find a new lead singer for the world renowned rock band "INXS". Fifteen made the cut and now, nine weeks into the "audition" process, they're down to the final four. Judging the singers are the remaining members of INXS - Kirk Pengilly, Garry Beers, Tim Farriss, Andrew Farriss and Jon Farriss. Acting as mentor to the group, who are all sharing a Hollywood Hills Mansion, is Dave Navarro (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction).
This is no "American Idol", this is pure Rock 'n Roll and adrenaline. There are also no "Simon's" in the judging booth. The singers are also given clinics during the week - stage craft, songwriting, studio time, fashion, vocal lessons, photo shoots, etc. It's most definitely a global phenomenon. You could probably walk up to a 16 year old and a 65 year old and they could BOTH tell you who their favorite "Rockstar" is. Burnett has also made the show interactive by allowing the viewers to vote for their favorite on Tuesday nights. Then, whomever ends up in the bottom 3 of the voting must sing an INXS tune and the band then chooses which one is "Just not right for our band".
The last three standing are all incredible singers and each with their own unique style and sound. As INXS said last week, it's now time to see who's "right" for INXS. In other words, the best fit for their particular band. Here are a few words about the finalists.
J.D. Fortune
J.D. Fortune has fronted a rock band, joined the Army, performed before stadium crowds and even made a living as an Elvis impersonator.
Raised in the Canadian countryside just outside of Nova Scotia, J.D. grew up listening to his grandfather sing and started performing at a very young age. He even dropped out of high school after being offered a job on a TV show.
Now, J.D. is primed to bring his life experience and musical talent to the world. A strict vegetarian and martial arts instructor, J.D. believes he has the discipline and the chops to become the new lead singer for INXS, a band of which he has always been a die-hard fan.
Marty Casey
The youngest of six children, Marty Casey founded his band, the Lovehammers, when he was 14 years old, and they've been together ever since. Marty has kept the band going even as he picked up a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Illinois, interned for the Board of Trade, worked for an independent record label and became a successful real estate appraiser.
The Lovehammers have opened for Nickelback, Jerry Cantrell, Interpol, New Found Glory, and, most recently, Cake and Gomez on a 21-city tour.
Marty and the Lovehammers have even been regularly placing singles in movie soundtracks, and their song "This Town" has been selected as the theme song for the World Shidokan Championships on ESPN.
His stage persona, which draws comparisons to Mick Jagger and Iggy Pop, belies a quiet, even shy guy in everyday life. But reserved though he may be, Marty is nonetheless on a search for an even bigger stage, which has led him to Los Angeles and this competition.
MiG Ayesa
MiG Ayesa was born in Manila, Philippines, but when he was 2 years old his family moved to Sydney, Australia. At the age of 20, MiG was offered the role of Ritchie Valens in the Australian production of the musical "Buddy." With his powerful voice and exotic good looks, MiG was a natural for the role.
After gaining further repute in Australia with successes in theater, commercials, TV, film and music, MiG made his next big leap in 2002, this time to London, ready to take his electrifying stage presence and robust voice to an even bigger stage. He quickly found another starring role in a rock-based show, this time in the Queen musical, "We Will Rock You." MiG proved to be so commanding in the role of Galileo that original Queen guitarist Brian May took an interest in his work, and they have now initiated their own collaboration.
Now, MiG feels ready to make the biggest leap of all -- to international superstardom. Between his ability to master different rock styles and his ongoing need to create his own original music (with bands Randy Badass & The Slickmaster Five, Lovetown and The Riva Band), he considers himself a natural to take the mantle of lead singer for INXS.
MiG knows that leaving a lead role on London's West End is a big risk, but after a successful career on stage, he also knows that opportunities like this one are extremely rare. That's why he's willing to put it all on the line for a shot at becoming a rock star.
CBS airs the performance show Tuesday nights @ 10pm Eastern/9pm Central, Elimination nights are on CBS Wednesdays @ 9pm Eastern/8pm Central, and a 1/2 hour reality show of "Life in the Mansion" airs on VH1 Sunday nights @ 8pm Eastern/7pm Central.
Just remember... I warned you... It's addicting! They'll be checking me into the Rockstar detox deROCKS clinic after the finals September 20th!
