143/Lava/Atlantic Companion Album to Be Released March 12th
Featuring Special Guest Stars
NEW YORK, March 1 -- VH1 captures a live homecoming
performance of pop siblings The Corrs when they return to Ireland in "VH1
Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin," premiering Thursday, March 14th at 9:00
P.M. ET/PT.
This special concert will air again on St. Patrick's Day, Sunday, March
17th at 1:00 P.M (ET/PT).
Taped January 25th, 2002 at Ardmore Studios outside of Dublin, the special
features the family quartet -- Andrea Corr, Sharon Corr, Caroline Corr, and
Jim Corr -- performing some of their most popular hits, such as "Breathless"
and "So Young," together with classic songs such as Neil Young's "Only Love
Can Break Your Heart," accompanied by a full orchestra.
Guests include U2's Bono who duets with Andrea Corr on Ryan Adams's "When
the Stars Go Blue" and on "Summer Wine," made famous by Lee Hazelwood and
Nancy Sinatra. The Rolling Stones' Ron Wood contributes his trademark guitar
stylings to The Corr's cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" as well as an
encore rendition of the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday."
The special is preceded by the release of the 143/Lava/Atlantic companion
album "VH1 PRESENTS THE CORRS LIVE IN DUBLIN" on March 12th. The recording
was produced by frequent Corrs collaborator Mitchell Froom, who has also
worked with Sheryl Crow and Paul McCartney, and mixed by Bob Clearmountain.
Fans of The Corrs can go to VH1.com to find a full interview with the
group, performance video clips and all of the information about the upcoming
album as well as a flip book of pictures from the concert.
"VH1 PRESENTS THE CORRS LIVE IN DUBLIN" is the group's first release since
2000's RIAA platinum-certified "IN BLUE." The album - which includes the hit
single "Breathless" - marked The Corrs' first U.S. million-seller. Both
1995's "FORGIVEN, NOT FORGOTTEN" and 1998's "TALK ON CORNERS" have been
certified RIAA gold. With over 23 million albums sold around the world
-- from Europe to Australia to Asia -- The Corrs are truly international
superstars.

Diana Ross Stars in Her First Concert DVD - 'The Lady Sings...Jazz & Blues-Stolen Moments - And Its Remastered And Reissued Album
LOS ANGELES, March 1 -- On December 4, 1992, one of the great
performers of our time, Diana Ross, assembled an all-star jazz ensemble at the
Ritz Theatre in New York for a one-time-only concert she called an "intimate
evening of jazz and blues." Now the album and homevideo that resulted, both
titled "The Lady Sings...Jazz & Blues-Stolen Moments," are being reissued to
mark its 10th anniversary and the 30th anniversary of the film Lady Sings The
Blues, which inspired the original performance.
The new homevideo version of "The Lady Sings...Jazz & Blues-Stolen
Moments" (Motown/UME), released March 19, 2002, is presented in the DVD
format, the first DVD release of Ross's storied career. Unlike the 1993 VHS
release, this DVD includes the complete 20-song plus performance, the first
time the entire "Stolen Moments" event has been available since the limited
edition laserdisc. Also featured are behind-the-scenes interviews with Ross
and rare rehearsal footage. With full-motion menu screens, the DVD also
contains a main menu that randomly plays a different background song each time
the disc is inserted into a player.
The audio for the homevideo DVD is digitally remastered from the original
sources in pure 24-bit (Dolby Digital and PCM), a major improvement over the
existing VHS. The album, now back in print after a hiatus, has also been
24-bit remastered from the original half-inch album master mixes, which are
different than the video mixes.
Well-remembered for her Oscar-nominated portrayal of Billie Holiday in
Lady Sings The Blues, Ross puts her personal stamp on the classics on "The
Lady Sings...Jazz & Blues-Stolen Moments." Included from the Holiday
repertoire are "God Bless The Child," "Love Is Here To Stay," "Strange Fruit"
and "Mean To Me," plus the pop Top 20 hit "Good Morning Heartache" from Lady
Sings The Blues. There are also standards from "The Man I Love," "Fine And
Mellow" and "Gimme A Pigfoot And A Bottle Of Beer" to "My Man," "Them There
Eyes" and "Ain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do." The now-added bonuses completing
the concert include "All Of Me," Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World"
and Ross's daughter Rhonda taking a turn with "It's Alright With Me."
Featured as well is a Rogers and Hart medley, a throwback to Ross's acclaimed
performances on The Supremes Sing Rodgers & Hart album (reissued with bonus
tracks on March 26, 2002).
Backing Ross is a stellar mix of contemporary and old school jazz
musicians, among them bassist Ron Carter, trumpeters Jon Faddis and Roy
Hargrove, pianist Barry Harris, trombonists Urbie Green and Slide Hampton,
guitarist Ted Dunbar, drummer Grady Tate and alto saxman Justin Robinson.
Conducting them is Motown legend Gil Askey, who guided Ross in the '60s and
'70s. Producer of the album is jazz great Ben Sidran,
With the re-release of "The Lady Sings...Jazz & Blues," a priceless stolen
moment is once again retrieved.

Letterman To Replace ABC'S Nightline?
David Letterman has been in negotiations with Disney President Robert Iger since January to take over ABC-TV's late-night period now occupied by Nightline and Politically Incorrect, the New York Times and the Washington Post reported today (Friday), citing unnamed sources. Letterman was said to be unhappy with the fact that his program must follow low-rated local newscasts in many markets and also with the quality of promotion his program receives. The Post said that Ted Koppel, the Nightline anchor, is furious over the talks with Letterman and is prepared to fight the network if his program is abandoned. Nightline frequently bests both the Letterman show on CBS and NBC's Tonight show with Jay Leno in the overall ratings, but falls below them in the all-important 18-49-year-old demo. Nightline, the New York Times said, therefore loses about $10 million a year for the network because it must sell commercials during the time period for less than its competitors do.
Hello, John Madden; Goodbye Dennis Miller
ABC has hired John Madden for Monday Night Football and fired Dennis Miller, the network said Thursday. Madden will be walking away from a contract at Fox that paid him $7.5 million annually and still had a year to run, taking a yearly pay cut of $2.5 million in his new four-year, $20-million deal with ABC. "MNF is just something that I've always wanted to do. ... This wasn't about the money," Madden explained in an interview with today's (Friday) New York Post. Media analysts doubted that Madden's hiring will boost ratings for the telecast, which fell 9 percent last season. Seth Zarkin, national broadcast director of ad agency Wieden & Kennedy, told Bloomberg News: "Monday Night football is only as good as its matchups. If the timing is right or the teams are good, it'll do a good rating. Just adding Madden is not going to boost ratings."
New Jersey Prosecutor Asks CBS To Delay 9/11 Documentary
Bergen County, NJ prosecutor William Schmidt has asked CBS to hold off broadcasting its planned documentary featuring footage shot at the World Trade Center at the time of the Sept. 11 attacks. In a letter dated Feb. 26 and excerpted in today's New York Times, Schmidt, saying he was writing on behalf of a victims' advisory board, noted that the March 10th broadcast could cause new trauma for family members of the victims. Gil Schwartz, a CBS spokesman, responded: "We feel very deeply for the victims and the families that are upset by this, and their feelings are being kept in mind as we work on the project." He added that the program will focus on the heroism and survival efforts that took place at the time of the attack.
Will Crowe's Post-BAFTA Conduct Cost Him An Oscar?
Russell Crowe's outburst at the producer of Britain's BAFTA awards last weekend may have cost him the chance to become the third man, after Spencer Tracy and Tom Hanks, to win the Oscar two years in a row, several analysts are suggesting. The Australian wire service AAP quoted a Hollywood source as saying that Academy members frown on "thuggish" behavior by Oscar nominees. MSNBC reported that A Beautiful Mind producer Brian Grazer and director Ron Howard were attempting to perform "damage control" among academy voters. "They know how much the Oscars can be a popularity contest and they've been both working overtime ... telling anyone who'll listen that Russell is a really, really great guy," a source remarked. But Britain's Scotsman newspaper featured interviews with three psychologists who suggested otherwise. "This is an issue of control," one said. "It seems as though he thinks he's so important now that we must listen to what he has to say." The Australian newspaper The Age compared his conduct to that of one of the characters in the British gangster movie Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. But Crowe himself, in an interview with Britain's Guardian newspaper called such a comparison "just bollocks."
Movie Reviews: We Were Soldiers
Most reviewers are noting that We Were Soldiers, starring Mel Gibson, tries valiantly to leap the politics of the Vietnam War and examine how it affected the men on the battlefield. That effort itself is being criticized by some critics. "We Were Soldiers deftly sidesteps the messy question of why we were in Vietnam in the first place in favor of giving deserving soldiers the old-fashioned heroic warrior treatment," writes Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times. But even on its own terms, the film is receiving wildly divergent reviews. Carrie Rickey in the Philadelphia Inquirer remarks that it "is not a lightning-paced, emotion-filled war movie but a turgid, platitudinous work of calendar art." On the other hand, Jay Carr in the Boston Globe remarks, "The film is carried by its intensity and conviction, and delivers a rude reminder that the soldiers' gung-ho attitude, which until recently was so out of fashion, is exactly what's needed on the ground to survive and win battles." Phillip Wuntch in the Dallas Morning News concludes: "The film succeeds as an homage to human spirit in the most shattering of circumstances." And A.O. Scott, writing the New York Times review, sums up: "Like the best war movies -- and like martial literature going back to the Iliad -- it balances the dreadful, unassuageable cruelty of warfare and the valor and decency of those who fight. That this is only part of the story -- that there can be cruelty without decency, violence without valor -- does not make it untrue."
Movie Reviews: 40 Days And 40 Nights
"40 Days and 40 Nights seems more like a sentence than a title," Joel Siegel remarked on Good Morning America this morning. His sentiment appears to be shared by many of his print colleagues. The film, which stars Josh Hartnett as a young man who decides to give up sex for Lent, is described by Lou Lumenick in the New York Post as "easily the most witless movie released this year." Michael Wilmington in the Chicago Tribune also uses the word "witless" to describe the film, adding that it is "also one of the dumbest romantic comedies in quite a while." But Philip Wuntch in the Dallas Morning News acknowledges that the movie may be "a crowd-pleaser rather than a critic-appeaser." In fact, a smattering of critics also appeared to enjoy it. Joe Morgenstern in the Wall Street Journal predicts that the movie "will make a mint, and deservedly so. It's very funny, terrifically lively and, considering how awful it might have been, surprisingly tender in its portrait of a young guy who learns sensitivity the hard way." And Eleanor Ringel Gillespie gives it this left-handed praise: "It's risqué, lewd, worth of Balzac, 90-plus minutes of pretty hilarious smut."
