Par works to strengthen family ties with Viacom
17 February 2006 (The Hollywood Reporter)
When Tom Cruise convened a hush-hush summit on the Paramount lot in December, about 100 top-level Viacom executives gathered to strategize a surefire launch of Paramount Pictures' Mission: Impossible 3, which opens May 5 in the U.S. With so much riding on the J.J. Abrams-helmed Cruise starrer -- the film marks the first project greenlighted by the new studio regime headed by Brad Grey and Gail Berman -- Viacom decided to marshal its far-reaching forces to ensure the summer tentpole's success. "It was fantastic," Paramount president Berman recalled of the summit. "It came from (president of worldwide picture marketing) Gerry Rich and (president of worldwide marketing, distribution and operations) Rob Moore and their brilliant idea of bringing the various Viacom divisions together and have them take an early look at the earliest teaser and meet Tom and J.J. and hear their vision of the movie."

Cruise Bullies Kanye West Into Impossible Mission
9 February 2006 (WENN)
Tom Cruise persuaded rapper Kanye West to change his mind about creating a new theme for Mission: Impossible III by paying him a visit. The movie star was adamant West should be involved in the soundtrack and when the rap star announced he was too busy to play around with the classic theme, Cruise refused to take no for an answer. Cruise tells MTV News, "I'm a big fan of his work and we said, 'What's Kanye doing?' - 'He's busy, busy, busy.' So... I went by and he's got two songs that he wrote that are just unbelievable - he did a version of 'Mission: Impossible' and an original... It is 'Wow'. When you see an artist that you just respect and he's so talented. I was like, 'Man, I'd love to see what he's gonna do with this.' You've got to hear what he did with it. It's Kanye West and it's really extraordinary. I looked at him and said, 'Man, you killed it.'"

'M:I-3' ad starts scavenger hunt
5 February 2006 (The Hollywood Reporter)
Paramount Pictures was ready to take advantage of Super Bowl Sunday's massive viewership to kick off the Ultimate Mission, an online scavenger hunt promoting Mission: Impossible 3, which opens in May. A 30-second commercial, which was set to air during the game's first half, promoted the interactive contest that involves clues hidden in specially created original shorts available for viewing on various Web sites. The spot also held the clue to solve the first question in the competition, which begins today and plays out over the next three months. "It's only a taste, but this spot will definitely tell you what we've got in store on May 5," said Gerry Rich, president of worldwide motion picture marketing at Paramount Pictures.

Daredevil Cruise Raises Blood Pressure on 'MI:3'
4 November 2005 (WENN)
Tom Cruise is terrifying film-makers on the set of Mission: Impossible III, by insisting on carrying out his own death-defying stunts. The superstar actor has refused to allow a stunt double to take on the dangerous high falls necessary for his part as secret agent Ethan Hunt in the sequel - and his willingness to push himself to the limit even scares legendary stunt coordinator Vic Armstrong, who is working on the film with him. Armstrong tells Total Film magazine "He did a 70 foot fall for us last week. He's amazing. He did about seven takes. Absolutely terrifies me - I can see the headlines! What a way to finish a career."

Scarlett Johansson pulled out of appearing in the second Mission: Impossible sequel after Tom Cruise tried to convert her to scientology, according to reports. Cruise, who produces the action adventures, met with Johansson ahead of casting for the upcoming Mission: Impossible 3 and took her to one of the controversial religion's headquarters, claims Radarmagazine.Com. A source tells the website, "After two hours of proselytizing, Cruise opened a door to reveal a second room full of upper-level Scientologists who had been waiting to dine with the pair, at which point the cool-headed ingénue politely excused herself." Officially Johansson quit the film because of scheduling conflicts after the film was delayed so Cruise could make War Of The Worlds.

That cast also included Carrie-Anne Moss, Kenneth Branagh and Scarlett Johansson.

Monaghan Is Cruise's Leading Lady
9 June 2005 (WENN)
Tom Cruise will star alongside Michelle Monaghan when filming for Mission: Impossible III starts next month. The Mr. & Mrs. Smith beauty has taken over leading lady duties from Scarlett Johannson, who was forced to drop out of the project last month due to a conflicting schedule. Cruise's young lover Katie Holmes and Lindsay Lohan were also in the race to play Cruise's love interest, but Monaghan beat out their competition to be chosen by director JJ Abrams and the Collateral star.
UPDATE:
'M:I-3' on Cruise control
8 June 2005 (The Hollywood Reporter)
Paramount Pictures said Tuesday that it will begin principal photography on Mission: Impossible 3, starring Tom Cruise, on July 18 in Italy. The announcement was made by Paramount Pictures chairman and CEO Brad Grey. In recent weeks, several press reports speculated that the film might not be given a green light even though casting was under way because of concerns over its budget as well as intense media coverage of Cruise's public romance with Katie Holmes, which some reports contended was damaging his standing as an A-list star.
UPDATE:
'Mission: Impossible' Is Possible Again
8 June 2005 (StudioBriefing)
After weeks of rumors that Paramount was considering canceling Mission: Impossible 3, starring Tom Cruise, despite having spent millions of dollars in preproduction, the studio formally greenlit it on Tuesday, saying that the movie will start shooting on July 18. The announcement reportedly followed a week of intense talks between Paramount chief Brad Grey and Cruise over the film's budget, which was said to have soared over $150 million, Cruise's own demand for a 30-percent cut of the gross, and his recent odd behavior on Oprah, which resulted in stills from the show landing on the front pages of numerous newspapers. Daily Variety reported today (Wednesday) that Cruise agreed to at least a 10-percent cut in the film's budget, the elimination of some exotic locations, and "modifications on his payday."
UPDATE:
Will 'Mission' Self-Destruct?
2 June 2005 (StudioBriefing)
The behavior of Tom Cruise while promoting the June 29 release of the Paramount/DreamWorks' film War of the Worlds has prompted Paramount execs to consider shelving Mission: Impossible III, in which Cruise is also slated to star (and which has seen its anticipated budget climb to over $150 million), the New York Times reported today (Thursday). The newspaper said that in recent promotional appearances Cruise has been spending so much time promoting Scientology and talking about his love for his new girlfriend Katie Holmes that War of the Worlds itself has been getting little attention. The Times indicated that Paramount and DreamWorks execs were particularly concerned about Cruise's odd behavior during an appearance on Oprah on May 23.
UPDATE:

The Mean Girls beauty, 18, shocked her fans earlier this year by dying her trademark red hair blonde and losing her famously ample chest, although she insists her new look is only temporary for her next film Fashionistas. She explains, "I'm happy with my life, and I love food. I'm just in training for a movie that I really want to do." Mission: Really Impossible for Scarlett & Carrie-Anne
6 May 2005 (WENN)
Scarlett Johansson and The Matrix star Carrie-Anne Moss have quit the second Mission: Impossible sequel because of ongoing delays. The two in-demand actresses were slated to team up with Tom Cruise in M:I 3 but director JJ Abrams reveals he has had to let them go because of scheduling problems around the film's script. He tells website About.com, "The script was rewritten. I'm a huge fan of each actor that they cast originally, but to have kept the actors when we are reinventing the story would have been an odd process. "To say, 'Write a script with these people in mind for characters that haven't been written,' just felt like we had to start over with a clean slate." Abrams, who has yet to announce his replacements for the project, is committed to starting the shoot in July.
UPDATE:
Cruise's Big Dreams Delaying 'Mission III'
19 November 2004 (WENN)
Hollywood star Tom Cruise's extravagant plans for the long-awaited Mission Impossible III film are reportedly causing problems for Paramount Studios, who fear the budget will spiral out on control. The actor is producing and reprising his role as agent Ethan Hunt in the sequel to 2000 hit Mission: Impossible II, which is scheduled to begin filming in June 2005. According to Fox News gossip columnist Roger Friedman, Paramount is concerned because no script exists for the movie. Friedman explains, "The rest of it is in Tom's head." In July, Narc film-maker Joe Carnahan quit the project citing "creative differences", and was replaced by first-time movie director JJ Abrams, whose previous credits include directing episodes of TV drama Alias. Despite decided locations in Germany, Belgium, Ghana, Canada and the US, Paramount is reportedly getting increasingly nervous over Cruise's plans to film in 15 countries, raising the budget to $234 million. Friedman says, "I am told that Cruise actually assembled a trailer for it, including credits, voiceovers and clips that he screened for friends as a way to bolster his ego. Trailers are made after a film is completed, not before it's even been shot."

Several writers have been involved with the project, including Dean Georgaris, Dan Gilroy, Robert Towne and Frank
Darabont.

Cruise Delays 'Mission: Impossible 3'
13 August 2004 (WENN)
Hollywood actor Tom Cruise has put his plans to shoot Mission: Impossible 3 on hold, so he can team up with director Steven Spielberg on War Of The Worlds instead. First-time movie director JJ Abrams was recently signed up to take on the successful franchise, but now work is not expected to begin on the project until at least next summer. And Spielberg has also put his own untitled project about the aftermath of the 1972 Munich Olympics on hold until June at the earliest. Now that the War of the Worlds project is proceeding - following two days of frenzied discussions - pre-production will have to be rushed to ensure the adaptation of HG Wells' novel makes its November start date and 2005 release. The original HG Wells classic novel covered a Martian invasion of Earth.

Cruise, Spielberg march into 'War'
12 August 2004 (The Hollywood Reporter)
Paramount Pictures is switching its tentpole pictures for next year. Mission: Impossible 3, which has been plagued by director problems, is out, and War of the Worlds, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise, is in. The studio said Wednesday that instead of beginning production on M:I-3 this summer, as had been originally planned, Cruise will instead go directly into Spielberg's modern-day adaptation of the H.G. Wells classic about a Martian invasion of Earth. War, which has been in development for some time, will begin filming in November for a release next year -- the exact date has not yet been decided. Cruise hasn't abandoned M:I-3, though. It will now shoot next summer, with J.J. Abrams, creator of the TV series Felicity and Alias, set to make his feature directorial debut.

Cruise Seeks a New 'Mission' Director
20 July 2004 (WENN)
Superstar actor Tom Cruise needs a new director for Mission Impossible 3 following film-maker Joe Carnahan's dramatic decision to quit. Studio Paramount have already delayed the film's release date until June 2005 but filming is scheduled to begin next month in Berlin, Germany. Mission Impossible 3 boasts an impressive cast including Scarlett Johansson, Carrie-Anne Moss, Kenneth Branagh and Ving

Thandie Opts Out of 'M:I 3'
18 June 2004 (WENN)
Thandie Newton turned down the chance to reprise her role in the upcoming Mission: Impossible 3 sequel - so she can write a new movie with her husband. The British actress lit up the big screen alongside Tom Cruise in 2000's Mission: Impossible II - but Thandie has forgone the chance to return to the action franchise. Instead she is occupying herself writing a screenplay with husband Oliver Parker, after becoming frustrated with Hollywood. Newton - who is currently starring alongside Vin Diesel in The Chronicles Of Riddick - says, "It's the occasional film that just reignites my love of acting. I can go through months where I just want to quit and it's funny the films that do reignite that love."

A source explains, "The studio were concerned about him looking right so they had a diet drawn up for him. But Tom told them he does his own preparation. And, according to onlookers at the Bocca Di Bacco restaurant, Tom tenderly held his former flame and comforted her as she wept openly in the plush eatery. One onlooker says, "Tom tried to comfort her, he put his arm around her and kissed her. He laid his arm around her shoulder and kissed her. Then she asked him again, 'Tell me why'". Cruise and Cruz split up in January but didn't reveal the break-up until last month.

'MI3' Release Date Pushed Back
13 June 2003 (IMDb Update)
This release date will self-destruct in five months…. Variety reports that in light of Tom Cruise's commitment to Michael Mann's Collateral, Paramount has quietly scrubbed the release date for Mission: Impossible 3, removing it from May 21, 2004. With MI3 now scheduled to go before the camera in January, a holiday 2004 or early summer 2005 release now looks more likely. MI3's move now gives Warner Bros.' Troy free reign for May 21, and clears up things for Fox's Day After Tomorrow and Sony's Hellboy as well. Joe Carnahan will direct Cruise and Ving Rhames in the action film; no other cast has been set.
UPDATE:
Par, C/W call Carnahan for 'M:I-3' duty
26 February 2003 (The Hollywood Reporter)
Narc director Joe Carnahan is in final negotiations to helm Paramount Pictures and Cruise/Wagner Prods.' third installment of their Mission: Impossible franchise. Dean Georgaris, who wrote the studio's upcoming Lara Croft and the Cradle of Life: Tomb Raider 2, is in negotiations to script M:I-3. The franchise's original screenwriter, Robert Towne, remains on board. Paramount is eyeing a summer 2004 release date for the film. M:I-3 reunites Carnahan with the studio and the production company as it was Cruise/Wagner that urged Paramount to pick up for distribution Carnahan's critically acclaimed feature film Narc. Paula Wagner and Tom Cruise also had executive producing credits on the project.
UPDATE:
Paramount Pictures are stepping away from a May 2004 opening date for Mission: Impossible 3, according to Variety. The studio are said to have moved off the date recently after Michael Mann announced plans to direct Collateral for DreamWorks, with Tom Cruise expected to topline and shooting expected to start in the fall. As a result, 'M:I 3' is now expected to begin shooting in January, which makes the previously planned May 21 release unlikely. According to the trade, the studio has not set a new release date, but the most likely scenario would be for 'M:I 3' to open during the 2004 holiday season or in May 2005.
UPDATE:
Filming: Production is scheduled to start in December, 2003 in Los Angeles (pushed back a few months from August, 2003 to give Tom Cruise time to star in Collateral).
UPDATE:
According to casting documents, the call is out to fill the role of Andy, a new member of IMF. In his late 20s to early 30s, Andy will be an essential element of the IMF team. Irreverent, offbeat, streetwise and exceptionally intelligent, Andy is a most improbable and unsuspecting agent. Technically brilliant, he is as amiable as he is witty, and has an astonishing range of aptitudes, which he is called upon to use in an assortment of undercover situations. The casting agents are looking for an actor who has a strong comedic background, however Andy will not be a "computer nerd who saves the day" clichés. Anything but a nerd, Andy should be athletic, engaging and a social animal. Andy's specific type is open, as casting agents are open to interpretations from sun-kissed surfer types to cosmopolitan sophisticates, as long as the actor can show the underlying intelligence of the character united with his intrinsic sense of comedy.
This is the second call producers have put out for this film. Back in early September, a call was released for Leah Quint, another member of the IMF team and a potential love interest for Ethan Hunt.
"Narc" director Joe Carnahan is still scheduled to helm the film. No official storyline.
