UPDATE:

Russell Crowe has hired former heavyweight champ and two-time Muhammad Ali opponent Joe Bugner to put him in shape for ''Cinderella Man.'' The film, directed by Ron Howard and co-written by Akiva Goldsman (his Oscar-winning collaborators on ''A Beautiful Mind''), is about Depression-era boxer James L. Braddock, who made history with his bloody, 15-round match against world champ Max Baer in 1935.

Word has it, Crowe is looking for a Chicago gym to work on his sparring skills.

UPDATE:

Russell Crowe's impending fatherhood will delay production on Cinderella Man. The Ron Howard-directed boxing drama, which also stars Renee Zellweger, was scheduled for a January start but will now get under way on March 1. Crowe's wife, Danielle Spencer, is expecting the couple's first child early next year, and Crowe doesn't want to be working when she gives birth. Universal and Imagine Entertainment, where Brian Grazer is producing, still plan to have the film in theaters by the end of 2004.

UPDATE:

Russell Crowe Quits Alcohol for Role
29 October 2003 (WENN)
Movie hardman Russell Crowe is so committed to getting in shape for his new movie role, he's quit drinking alcohol for 63 days. The Gladiator actor's change of lifestyle, to help him prepare for his part as a boxer Jim Braddock in Cinderella Man, has shattered his reputation as a hard-partying hell-raiser, and left him with a bizarre new addiction - shopping. Crowe insists he's now more likely to be found scouring the shops in Los Angeles with pregnant wife Danielle Spencer, who has been encouraging him to concentrate his efforts on buying things for their unborn child. Russell laughs, "I'm preparing for my role in Cinderella Man so I'm getting into shape and alcohol tends to put weight on. I now have a black belt in shopping. I've been buying clothes for the baby ever since I arrived in Los Angeles."
