"Austin Powers 3" plot revealed
POSTED ON 01/16/02 AT 12:00 P.M.
BY THOMAS CHAU

I got a heads up over at IGN FilmForce (http://filmforce.ign.com) regarding the plot for the third "Austin Powers" film. Below is what the site had to report:

Here's the set-up: Dr. Evil and Mini-Me (Verne Troyer returns) have somehow escaped from a maximum security prison. Subsequently, the duo teams up with the film's title character, Goldmember (described as mysterious yet peculiar). Together they formulate a plan for (what else) world domination. And this particular scheme requires 1) a considerable amount of time-travel, and 2) kidnapping Austin Powers' father, England's eminent master spy, Nigel Powers. As Austin chases Dr. Evil, Mini-Me and Goldmember through time, he stops in 1975 to "connect" with an old girlfriend, detective Foxy Cleopatra (Beyonce Knowles), and requests her assistance to track the villains and save his father.

New Line upset over "Austin Powers" trailer reaction?
1/25/02

If you tried clicking on the "Austin Powers in Goldmember" teaser trailer link on ours, or any other site, you may have noticed a broken link.

That's because New Line Cinema is ordering all theaters to either return or destroy copies of the "Austin Powers in Goldmember" teaser trailer and one-sheet poster, due to fans' reactions which a majority range from apathetic to negative. The studio is apparently trying for a new marketing strategy. Look for a new trailer possibly with the second release of "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" or with "Blade 2."

UPDATE:

New Austin Powers Movie Title Recalled
Owners Of James Bond Franchise Don't Like Name

Dr. Evil isn't the only one giving Austin Powers fits.

MGM is forcing New Line Cinema to recall thousands of trailers and posters for the next Austin Powers movie "Goldmember."  The company said the name hurts the James Bond franchise.  It'll cost New Line "meeellions" of dollars.

MGM also didn't like the title of the first movie "The Spy Who Shagged Me," but a deal was worked out for that one.

Meanwhile, the makers of the Austin Powers film said that they still hope to use the title "Goldmember," even though The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has upheld MGM's complaint.

A New Line Cinema representative, said that the company was trying to settle the matter with MGM, and stay within MPAA guidelines, according to a report by the British Broadcasting Corp.

Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reported that MGM executives had been particularly irritated by a scene in the trailer where the character is painted in sparkling gold, the trademark of the Bond film.

MGM's vice chairman Chris McGurk told The Wall Street Journal that the studio had a "zero-tolerance policy towards anyone who tries to trade in on the James Bond franchise without authorization."

UPDATE:

The original "Austin Powers 3" teaser trailer has now been destoryed after the conflict with MGM regarding the usage of the "Goldmember" title but New Line was quick to put up a new "Austin Powers" teaser during the Superbowl. New Line has now released the Quicktime version of the teaser trailer.

UPDATE:

2/22/02: It was widely reported today that New Line had chosen "Licensed to Shag" as the new title for its third Austin Powers film. There was only problem, says Variety: "It's completely erroneous," a New Line spokeswoman said. "We don't even like the title."

New Line is still shopping for a new name for the summer release, she said, after the studio was hit with up to $15 million in penalties when James Bond franchise owner MGM protested New Line's failure to properly register the previous "Austin Powers in Goldmember" title.

UPDATE:

'Goldmember' Gets License to Spoof
HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. That seems to be the operating principle behind MGM and United Artists' 11th-hour negotiation that could allow New Line Cinema to use the "Austin Powers in Goldmember" title for the third installment of its snaggletooth spy franchise.
Although no deal is in place -- ultimate approval has yet to be gained from the Broccoli family, which holds the James Bond license -- New Line is expected to receive permission to use the title, which spoofs the 1964 Bond film "Goldfinger." In exchange, the upcoming Bond picture "Die Another Day" and other MGM titles will be trailered on both the "Austin Powers" film and "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring." The trailers would be spliced onto the films at New Line's expense rather than put on a separate reel, which allows the option of using alternate trailers. It's a deal that easily could have been reached nine weeks ago, when the "Goldmember" fracas reached its apex. At the time, however, MGM and UA seemed caught up in the chase to pounce on the vulnerable "Goldmember," which New Line left open under Motion Picture Assn. of America guidelines when the studio failed to respond to MGM and UA's petition to block the title. The Bond-spoofing sensibility of "Austin Powers" has always annoyed the MGM and UA camps, and never more so than after its creator-producer-star, Mike Myers, rejected the studio's offer to star in "The Pink Panther" after many months of talks. In the end, however, it seems cooler and more practical heads prevailed. While MGM and UA can block "Goldmember," parody law provides them with no control over any number of other Bond-spoofing titles. Among the approved titles waiting in the wings are "Live and Let Shag," "You Only Shag Thrice," "Never Say Member Again" and "License to Shag." With any upside in Bond-license protection thus destroyed, there seems little reason for MGM and UA to pass on the opportunity to benefit at New Line's expense. The title of the blockbuster second installment in Myers' franchise, "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," was a play on the 1977 Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me." The third film in the Austin Powers series is slated for release July 26. It features Myers in four roles, including that of the villain Goldmember. New Line would not comment for this story and MGM did not return calls for comment.
