"Crossroads" is the story of three childhood friends, Lucy (Britney Spears), Kit (Zoe Saldana) and Mimi (Taryn Manning), who, after eight years apart, rediscover their friendship on a cross-country trip. With barely a plan, practically no money but plenty of dreams, the girls catch a lift with Mimi's handsome, mysterious friend Ben (Anson Mount) in his '73 Buick convertible. Along the way they not only gather experiences that will change their lives forever, but they also discover how important it is to hold onto their hearts' desires.

Now for The Zone's Eye View

Ok, I made it through this whole film without tossing my cookies once! I must admit, I was dreading having to watch this flick and literally forced myself to sit down and watch it. While there were plenty of flaws, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. That’s not an endorsement, just an observation. Let’s just say, I hope this will be Britney’s last attempt at actually starring in any more movies, even though she now has her own production company. There have been only a handful of singers that have actually been capable of acting, Jennifer Lopez, Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston off the top of my head. Certainly NOT Mariah Carey! (Let’s hope she doesn’t read this and have yet another breakdown!)

Back to the film at hand, “Crossroads”. This movie is definitely aimed at young teenage girls. The only thing I got out of it was a few memories of some of my old high school buddies. This tells the tale of 3 best friends at 10 years old, who have grown apart. At the age of 10, the three best friends, Lucy (Britney Spears), Kit (Zoe Saldana) and Mimi (Taryn Manning) bury a box of “dreams” and vow to meet at midnight of their graduation to open it. Lucy is the valedictorian and the “good girl” virgin, Kit is the Homecoming Queen and fashion freak, and Mimi is the trailer park girl who is now 5 months pregnant. Despite their reservations, they all find themselves at the spot where the box is buried at midnight and this is where everything begins to change for them.

After opening the box, they all see and remember what they put inside, and start to all walk off in different directions. Then Mimi speaks up and tells them that she’s going to Los Angeles to audition for a record deal and they could come if they wanted. Needless to say, they all find a reason they need to take the trip. Mimi has arranged for her friend Ben (Anson Mount) to drive them since he was going there also.

Mimi is going to LA to try her luck at a record contract, Kit wants to see her fiancé at UCLA and surprise him, and Lucy wants to be dropped off in Arizona to meet her mother (Kim Cattrall) who left her and her father (Dan Aykroyd) when she was only 3 years old.

They have all sorts of mishaps and adventures and yes…catfights along the way. Then we kick into gear when their car overheats and they need money to fix it. Well, what a better way than to be in a Karaoke Contest! Mimi was supposed to be the lead, but gets stage fright, so guess who takes over and does her best Joan Jett rendition of “I Love Rock ‘N Roll”. The rendition actually was pretty good, but Britney could use some help with her lip-synching. Of course, the crowd loves them, and they end up with more than they need for the car repairs.

The three girls rekindle their friendships and vow never to drift apart again. Then each one of them has an unpleasant experience along the way bringing them even closer to each other.

All in all, a pretty sappy teen chick flick. Britney had some problems with her dialogue as well, she is supposed to be a “Georgia Peach”, but kept forgetting and couldn’t seem to keep one dialect through the whole movie. The others actually did pretty well for this type of film. I was very disappointed that Kim Cattrall has maybe 3 lines in the entire movie. A very unwise decision, this movie could have really used her. I’d also have to go with “Ben’s” choice of radio stations! The girls always wanted to hear their Britney “sound-a-likes” or “boy bands”, while Ben actually tuned into some REAL rock ‘n roll! The Zone would have to give “Crossroads” a 3 out of 10, mainly because it has a good message at heart, and the closeness of Lucy and her father is very touching.
