It's summer vacation, and college freshman Lewis Thomas (Paul Walker) is ready to embark on a cross-country road trip with the girl of his dreams, Venna (Leelee Sobieski). But Lewis' romantic plans are detoured when he stops to rescue his never-do-well older brother, Fuller (Steve Zahn). Fuller, notorious for causing trouble, goads Lewis into playing a practical joke on a lonely trucker over a CB radio. The trucker, an unseen and terrifying force known only by his handle "Rusty Nail," wants the last laugh...and revenge.

Now for The Zone's Eye View

“Joy Ride” was one of the most enjoyable movies I’ve watched in a long time, as far as “horror” movies go. It was suspenseful, surprising, a great cast, and how can you go wrong by using “Buffalo Bill” (Silence of the Lambs) as the bone chilling voice on the CB!

Usually, with horror movies these days, especially this bombardment of “teen horror flicks”, there isn’t much actual “horror”. But, Joy Ride definitely took you on a wild ride of terror! It will surely make you think twice before using a CB radio. There was also the element of humor incorporated, which was truly amusing! Steve Zahn provided us with his usual one-liners, and his typical sense of humor, which was such a plus in the film. Leelee Sobieski bestows us with her unique grace and style as she always does on film. And, Paul Walker plays a great “mama’s boy” type who, when he has to act ‘scared’ in a scene, we actually believe he truly is terrified.

Joy Ride begins with Lewis Thomas (Walker) driving to Salt Lake City to bail his delinquent brother Fuller (Steve Zahn) out of jail…again. He was on his way to Boulder Colorado anyway to pick up his aspirant girlfriend, Venna (Sobieski) and drive home for their college break to New Jersey. While on the road to Boulder, the brothers decide to play a game with the CB. They pretend to be a girl, and invite an unknown trucker known as  “Rusty Nail” to meet ‘her’ at their motel and give him a fake room number.

Rusty Nail shows up, and is not very happy about the little joke that has been played on him. The guys think they’re rid of the truck driver, and move on when they hear the words  “Candy Cane….”on the CB. (The handle they used for the ‘girl’) It seems that Rusty Nail has his own idea of a practical joke and it doesn’t end so funny.

There are thrills and shrills all the way through the movie. This is definitely one to watch late at night with all the lights out and HOPE the phone doesn’t ring!!!!!!!  Joy Ride was such a fun movie and refreshingly scary. The Zone gives Joy Ride a 7 out of 10 for the adrenalin rush!
