Synopsis of movie, courtesy of Fox Searchlight:

"Sexy Beast" is the story of one man's dangerous journey from peace of mind to paranoid panic when he's lured out of an idyllic retirement back to the gangster life. Award-winning commercial director Jonathan Glazer directs Ray Winstone ("Nil by Mouth") and Ben Kingsley in a colorfully original script.

Actually a noir masterpiece, amidst the scenery of the landscapes of Costa del Sol, Spain, Sexy Beast was much like an abstract painting. You really had to just sit and gaze very closely to what the artist (director Jonathan Glazer) was trying to convey. Although, very well acted, especially by the nominated Ben Kingsley, one might wonder if the movie was possibly written to revolve around his character, because the plot in general was really thin.  It was your basic heist movie, revolving around a group of gangsters and a group of retired gangsters turned sun worshipers.

The camera work, the writing, the location, and especially Kingsley’s dialogue and character were wonderful. There were many quick cuts, luckily in the right places, as so many filmmakers fail to get right. The quick cuts mainly focused on the disturbing and violent scenes, which is where they should be for a more dramatic effect. The music score also fit in well in these parts I speak of, very loud, heavy, disturbing and fitting to the scenes.

(I will forewarn you, if you have a problem understanding very strong English dialects, this will be a tough one. They all speak very fast and with an extremely heavy English accent. You will more than likely find yourself rewinding a lot to catch what was said.)

The movie revolves around a retired criminal Gary "Gal" Dove (Ray Winstone), who has moved with his former porn star wife Deedee (Amanda Redman) to Spain and has never been happier. That is until their friends tell them of a phone call they received from London. Gal’s former Boss, Don Logan (Ben Kingsley) has personally requested the services of Gal, even though he’s retired and has made that clear to everyone. He makes his intentions known to everyone that he will be turning down whatever this “job” is when Don arrives in Spain the following day. Unfortunately, Don doesn’t take “No” for an answer very well.

For those who are used to seeing Ben Kingsley in his dramatic story roles, put your seatbelts on! This is a side of him you will not be expecting. He has never been one to let down the moviegoers though, and he doesn’t disappoint with this movie either. As for the actual film, this one is going to be a toss up. For those of you who appreciate surreal, dark and disturbing films you will like it. If you’re just watching the movie to see Ben Kingsley, and for no other reason, you will hate it! As I said in my opening sentence, about halfway through the movie, all I could think in my head was “this is an abstract painting”! That thought never left me throughout the rest of the movie.

I am rating Sexy Beast an 8 out of 10, for Kingsley’s performance, but also the cinematography, directing and writing.
