Now for The Zone's Eye View

By Laura Alber

The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood is a perfectly blended mix of comedy, drama, tear jerking moments and an ensemble cast that would make Robert Altman proud! Though the film has been “branded” a “chick flick”, it might be worth your while men, to take a look…you just might find out some answers as to your companion’s little “quirks”. If you’ve ever wondered about “why” they do the things they do, this will probably open your eyes quite a bit. And, for the women, each and every woman that sees this film can most likely relate to the mother/daughter relationship. At least at some point in your life I’m sure you’ve wanted to slam the phone against the counter on your mother! I know I have.

The incredible cast consisted of Sandra Bullock (Siddalee Walker) who is the daughter in question, who is a writer by trade, and gets an article published in TIME magazine about her career, in which some of her quotes about her mother get a little twisted around. “Mother” (Vivian Abbott 'Vivi' Walker) played by the fabulous Ellen Burstyn proudly begins to read the article on her famous daughter, and then she gets to the personal and somewhat harsh statements that had been taken out of context. Her Ya-Ya sisters since grade school, Maggie Smith (Caro), Fionnula Flanagan (Teensy), and Shirley Knight (Necie) were on hand with Vodka and words of wisdom. Husband James Garner (Shep Walker) knows well enough to stay out of this battle.

The three Ya-Ya’s minus Vivi, travel to talk with Siddalee, who doesn’t want to hear it from them, as she as just as upset and frustrated. But, they convince her to take them out for dinner and then they’ll leave. Well, the Ya-Ya’s have more tricks up their sleeves, and slip a drug into her drink and kidnap her. They take her to their cottage in the South with the intentions of showing her their treasured “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood” scrapbook, which they believe will clear up many things for her. They know she doesn’t know about her mother’s past, or at least the truth about it.

Each character is fully developed and becomes well loved throughout the movie, and the location was perfect. A quiet southern farmhouse right on the beach. We go through the scrapbook with Sandra and this is where the beautiful and talented Ashley Judd comes in. She is the young Vivi, and as always, she can portray any emotion you toss her way, happy, sad, frustrated, silly, and downright psychotic.

I don’t like to get too personal about my viewing experiences, but this was one I had to see with my own mother. And, I am so glad I did. We both enjoyed it so much, and related to it so well, that we’re starting our own Ya-Ya group here in town! There is such a warm feeling of friendship, trust and loyalty to this story, that you can’t help but get engrossed it in completely. Everyone could take some notes from this film, if nothing else, at least walk out of the theater with the knowledge that true friendship above all else is what is important. Unconditional and eternal friendship. It’s something we all need, but don’t often admit. This movie may just help you understand why it’s so important.

Before you write it off as just another “chick flick”, please give this film a shot. You might be quite surprised how quickly you get drawn in. This is definitely one of the best comedies I’ve seen so far this year, and the cast and acting couldn’t have been better. Maggie Smith alone is worth going for!!  The Zone was so impressed with this film, and hopes you’ll give it a try, and rates it a high 8. Brilliant work all the way around!
